Aesthetic medicine has gained a lot of popularity in recent years and the number of professionals practicing in this field has increased dramatically. It can be difficult to navigate all the procedures and clinics available in a certain area. Selecting the cosmetic doctor you will trust is a crucial step. You should never trivialize these treatments, which, while not medically necessary, can have serious medical consequences if not done by trained professionals who are experts in the field. So what should you look for when trying to find the best professional to consult? Here are four qualities of a good cosmetic doctor.

1. GOOD BEDSIDE MANNERS

In addition to his or her qualifications, a good aesthetic doctor must be a good listener. It is very important that he or she gives you enough time during the first consultation to ask you about your medical history, what you are looking for in terms of results and to explain in detail the advantages and disadvantages of the procedures he or she recommends. A comprehensive assessment and clear explanation on the first visit will make all the difference in your experience with medical aesthetics. It is also important that this doctor be available to answer your questions and/or concerns if needed after the procedure.

2. EXPERTISE

Aesthetic medicine is a relatively new practice if we compare it to many other fields of medicine. It is a field that is not very well known by everyone and is often confused with the field of non-medical aesthetic care, which does not require the same level of knowledge of the human body. As a result, patients sometimes resort to aesthetic medicine procedures performed by people who are not trained to do this type of work. Since 2020, the practice of aesthetic medicine is increasingly regulated in Quebec, but there are still illegal practices that one must be wary of. Only a qualified physician or a qualified nurse supervised by such a physician can legally practice cosmetic medicine in Quebec. These are medical procedures that must be performed according to the rules of the art in order to be successful and safe. The number of years of experience as well as the number of days per week devoted to aesthetic medicine are also important points to consider. Naturally, we become experts in what we practice regularly and frequently.

3. GOOD REPUTATION

These days, we can easily have access online to comments from other patients about their experience with a cosmetic doctor or nurse. Certainly, everyone is different and we don’t all connect with the same people in the same way, but a majority of positive or negative feedback is often a good indication of the quality of a professional’s care and approach. Also, word of mouth doesn’t lie. If someone you know and trust refers you to a professional with whom he or she has had a good experience, it is usually a very good indicator of the quality of care provided by that professional.

4. KNOWS WHEN TO SAY NO

A good professional in aesthetic medicine must obviously listen to the requests of his patients. However, if this professional judges that some of these requests will lead to exaggerated and unnatural results that will not respect the original anatomy and proportions of the patient’s face or body, it is his or her responsibility to refuse the treatment for the good of the patient. Like any health professional, the aesthetic medicine professional must have the well-being of his patients and the quality of the care he provides at heart.
