WHAT IS IT ?

Melasma, commonly referred to as pregnancy mask, appears as hyperpigmented spots on areas of sun-exposed skin. Melasma is more common in women than in men. Hormones, sun exposure, as well as genetic predisposition are the main causes of this benign skin condition.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES ?

HORMONES

The increase in estrogen level in women (combined oral contraceptives, pregnancy, etc.) plays a major role in the onset of melasma.

SUN EXPOSURE

In general, the skin areas that are mostly exposed to UV rays (forehead, cheeks, upper lip) are at higher risk of developing melasma.

This video shows a melasma treatment.

PREVENTION

SKIN CARE

To prevent the onset of melasma, a good skincare routine should include daily sun protection as well as a lightening cream.

LIFESTYLE HABITS

Prevention of melasma can be done by avoiding sun exposure without protection (hat, sunscreen, etc.).
