WHAT IS IT ?

Dermal fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid. They can be injected into the skin to reduce the signs of aging, correct wrinkles, compensate for missing facial volumes and increase lip volume, among others. Fillers are also used to revitalize and moisturize the skin of the face, neck and décolleté.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

Over the years, the face loses several crucial structures. Adipose tissue, muscles and bones lose volume and the skin loses its elasticity creating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, made from hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar found in the skin, fill in wrinkles and hollows in areas that lack volume. After their injection, the skin looks smoother and less wrinkled.

WHAT ARE THE RESULTS ?

Dermal fillers add volume to the skin. Their use can fulfill several aesthetic desires such as increasing the volume of the lips, removing a bump on the nose, enhancing cheekbones, defining the chin and jaw, among others. In fact, dermal fillers have 3 main functions: to improve skin quality, to eliminate unwanted features such as wrinkles, and to modify the proportions of the face if necessary.

WHAT IS
THE TECHNIQUE ?

The injection of dermal fillers is an invasive procedure and is performed by a trained medical professional. Dermal filler injections can be done with a needle or cannula, depending on the area to be treated. An anesthetic cream may be applied to the treated area approximately one hour prior to treatment to minimize discomfort.

DOES IT HURT ?

Injection treatment with dermal fillers is considered painless by the majority of patients. Many patients report feeling a slight pinching or tingling sensation. In order to avoid discomfort, especially in certain more sensitive areas, a topical anesthetic may be applied on the skin 60 minutes prior to treatment.
A dermal filler treatment takes between 10 to 60 minutes, depending on the area treated. The effect of the injections is usually noticeable immediately after the procedure. However, the final result may take 10 to 14 days to appear. During this time, the swelling or bruising that sometimes occurs after the procedure will disappear completely.
The effect of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers is long-lasting, but not permanent. Depending on the product used, the treated area, and the patient's skin condition, the results may last from 6 to 18 months. Dermal fillers that contain calcium hydroxyapatite, commonly known as Radiesse®, last up to 24 months. This time can be shortened or extended depending on skin type, lifestyle, injection site and finally, the preparation itself.
You will be able to resume your daily activities immediately after the procedure. It is recommended that you maintain an upright position for the first 3 to 4 hours after the procedure and sleep with your head elevated the first night to reduce swelling. In addition, you will need to avoid all physical activity and limit sun exposure for 24 hours after treatment.
All dermal fillers are temporary preparations and are excreted from the body in a natural way. The effects of the treatment can be maintained by a balanced diet with sufficient water and medical grade skin care. The best way to maintain results is to repeat the procedure on a regular basis. Follow your doctor's recommendations for maintenance appointments and repeat procedures, as it is always easier to maintain a result that has already been achieved than to start from scratch.
Dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid have been around for several years and are well tolerated by patients. They are safe and give a natural cosmetic effect. The most common side effects that can be expected are swelling, bruising and erythema at the injection site. In rare cases, bumps may be palpable under the skin, but these are reversible with the help of the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, called hyaluronidase.
Contraindications to dermal filler injections are inflammation, acne, herpes or infection of the skin at the injection site. It is recommended to avoid this type of treatment in people who have a genetic tendency to form hypertrophic scars or who suffer from uncontrolled autoimmune diseases. Pregnancy is also a contraindication.
